Halva is a popular food throughout Greece and the Middle East, epecially during lent. Paired with coffee or tea as a dessert, this halva is a crushed sesame confectionery with almonds.
In 1898 Athanasios Matis brings from Aivali in Asia Minor, the art of halva-making to Trikala, Northern Greece, and opens at the town center, one of the first halva workshops in Greece. The stone mill that grinds sesame to produce the tahini paste that is used for the halva, is powered by horses; the daily halva production is just a few pounds. Throughout the years the company always keeps up with demand; production is transferred to modern, larger facilities with brand new equipment, and Quality Management Systems are put in place. Meanwhile new markets for the company's products emerge, both in Greece and abroad. With the help of modern machinery and technology the production capacity increases, and products are adapted to today's consumers needs, while always maintaining their authentic taste and traditional character.
Today Matis products are found on the shelves of grocery stores and supermarkets all over Greece, as well as in supermarkets of 15 other countries.
